ALJAMA - ancient songs from the Mediterranean
|
|
|
"ALJAMA" is a temporal and geographical musical journey in the Mediterranean, which starts from the songs of the ancient Sephardic, Christian and Muslim communities of the Iberian peninsula (Al Andalus), to arrive in Turkey, ideally following the migrations of peoples over the centuries. The name Aljama indicated the Arab and Sephardic minorities still present in the Iberian Peninsula after the fall of the Arab Empire. The Aljama worldmusic project has as its focus the populations of the Mediterranean in their ideal union and synergy, focusing the attention on songs and sounds in which music and cultures from all over the Mediterranean converge. Claudio Merico - viella, rebec, violin, symphonia, Andalusian Arabic rebab, oud, choirs. Giulia Tripoti - voices, bendir, flutes, saz, symphonia, percussions, choirs
+ special guests
The group can perform in formation of 2 to 5 musicians.

"ALJAMA" Ancient songs of the Mediterranean" the album by Claudio Merico and Giulia Tripoti, produced by Karkum Project (January 2022).
The disc is the result of research, study and concerts around Italy, which began in 2018. It comes to life from the musical program "Sefarad" and is a temporal and geographical journey which, starting from the songs of the ancient Sephardic communities, Christian and Muslim women of the Iberian Peninsula (Al Andalus), travels along the Mediterranean and then arrives in Turkey, ideally following the migrations and diasporas of peoples over the centuries. The initial focus, therefore, is centered on the ancient Iberian communities, which coexisted for many centuries, to then follow their migrations in a temporal path throughout the Mediterranean (as in the case of the Sephardic diaspora) up to Turkey. The name "Aljama" referred to the Arab and Sephardic minorities still present in the Iberian Peninsula after the fall of the Arab Empire. The disc is the result of musical experiences, in which there is no lack of personal artistic and aesthetic nuances, with a somewhat modern and not necessarily philological vision, which aims to make these wonderful sounds their own. The atmospheres range from purely melodic and meditative moments to others that are more rhythmic and engaging. From the Sephardic Romances to the Cantigas de Santa Maria, up to the Andalusian Al-Ala Music, in perfect harmony with the meeting of cultures, religions and peoples, which has characterized the history of the "Middle Sea" for centuries.
Claudio Merico - viella, rebec, violin, symphonia, Andalusian Arabic rebab, oud, choirs. Giulia Tripoti - voices, bendir, flutes, saz, symphonia, percussions, choirs.

Karkum Project is an "open project" that deals with research, study and revival of the different cultures of peoples. In the field of cultural diffusion, it has been implementing various initiatives since 2017. From 2018 to 2021 produced three documentaries ("Pizzica Pizzica: Franca Tarantino and the traditional Salento dance", "Mario Salvi: the discovery of the accordion and pizzica in the land of the trulli", "Arbëresh: The musical traditions of the ancient Albanian communities in Italy") as well as collaborating with Enrico Scarinci on the research, recovery, study and re-proposition of the traditional songs of Central Italy (Sabina). During the pandemic they produced “Earth Mother” a music videoclip with musicians from different parts of the world (Italy, Spain, China, Iran) to raise awareness for a more conscious and respectful rebirth of our Mother Earth. In 2019 they organized the multicultural festival "Tufello World Music Festival" in the popular "Tufello" district of Rome. In 2020 with the musical program "Sefarad" they promoted and re-proposed the ancient Sephardic songs. An important testimony of the multiculturalism of the whole Mediterranean. A first study by Claudio Merico and Giulia Tripoti, which will flow towards the development and representation of the different Iberian cultures that coexisted in Al Andalus (Arab Spain in the Middle Ages) in the Middle Ages. The material and the research carried out aim at the dissemination, cultural aspect (through the portal www.karkumproject.it) and the production of the first album of Karkum Project called "Aljama" (in Arabic "religious community") which will be followed by a Italian tour of presentations throughout 2022. In 2023 Karkum Project produced the album "Sahira - Stories of heroic women", an original work (lyrics and music) in the field of world music focused on the heroic and divine feminine in which international guests from the Mediterranean to India and Africa participate.
